A vacation of sorts

This is the last week of regular instruction. But we still have to take a written test in Japanese class that's like our final. The earlier the better?
I took an important test last weekend too. Japanese Language Proficiency Test, you were a formidable opponent. We don't know who won yet, but I will never give up. Even if I win against you, I'll chase your older brother (level 1) down!
Anyway...

Today's real topic is...

pictures!
Enjoy.

I departed from here, King Street Station.

But instead of taking a train I rode the bus. Did you know that the bus is actually faster?

This is where I arrived. Vancouver's Pacific Central Station. It felt more international as soon as I arrived.

One thing that seemed more international was that all the hotels seemed to have a pub attached to them. Not only did my hotel have a pub on the right side of it, but it even had a liquor store on the other side! That's a bad sign.

I should have thought more about what I would need before the test. There were lots of noises and people being rowdy until late in the night and I wasn't able to sleep well. It'll be too bad if it affects my test results.

And now a picture gap.

Ookay, we've arrived. I've ridden the bus from Capilano University to downtown and am in Chinatown. Vancouver's Chinatown is bigger, has less restaurants and more dried-goods stores than Seattle' Chinatown. This was my first picture of the day:

Yup. That's a cat. A cat in a bakery, no less. In the US this kind of thing is illegal. I guess Canada really is a world away.

Why is there a Jimi Hendrix shrine in a place like this? I have no idea.

Highlight: Delicious Cambodian food! And Vietnamese coffee. It was really good!

Mountains of dried goods.

An old man feeding birds.

These weird-looking utility poles were everywhere in downtown Vancouver. They look like they're kind of leaning on the buildings. They also have an old-fashioned feeling about them.

It's uni! It was a sample but I didn't try any. I was a little scared.
Well, it looks like it's time to head back...

I tried my best to use up all of my Canadian money, but I had about 70 cents left. I decided to leave it on the station's wall for other travelers.
Farewell, Vancouver!

  1. That cat has pretty good camouflage.

Alsi, I think the birds must be relatives of the Grackle or Brewer's Blackbird.

  2. I like your pictures Roselle. My sister Marci and I were there in June and I recognize many of the places that you photographed.

  3. I never would have guessed the bus would be faster... it seems backwards.

How long were you in Vancouver?

  5. Hello Kingsbury San,

Thank you for sharing the pics.

I took the JLPT last weekend, too. I also saw some of our classmates! It is pretty hard for me!

This class is a lot of fun! I am actually a little sad that it is over! Are you taking JPN422 in Winter?

I will be pretty busy for my major next quarter, but hopefully I can take JPN423 in Spring quarter!
